5 Content Marketing Mistakes Small Businesses Make (And How to Fix Them)

Dana Gaubatz • July 3, 2025

When I first started working with small business owners, almost every conversation went the same way.

“I know I should be posting more.”
“I want to be consistent.”
“I’m just not sure what works anymore.”

Sound familiar?

Content marketing is one of the most powerful ways to attract and convert customers.

Over 50% of businesses planned to increase their content marketing budget this year.

But here’s the truth: more money and more content don’t guarantee better results.

If your strategy is off—or missing completely—your content won’t perform.

Let’s break down the five most common content marketing mistakes I see all the time (and how you can fix them).

1. Jumping In Without a Strategy 🎯

Many small businesses treat content like a checklist:
❌ Made a post today
❌ Wrote a caption
❌ Shared a quote

But without a clear strategy, content becomes noise.

A real content strategy means:

  • Knowing who you're talking to
  • Understanding what they care about
  • Deciding how and when to show up

Think of your content like a roadmap, not a random playlist. Every post should guide your audience closer to action.

Quick Fix:
Create a simple content plan. Define your audience, set 1–2 goals (like lead generation or brand awareness), and pick 3–5 content pillars you’ll rotate through (e.g., tips, behind-the-scenes, testimonials, FAQs, etc.).

2. Not Really Knowing Your Audience 👀

This is a big one.

You might think you know your audience… but are you posting what they care about—or what you think they care about?

That disconnect can cost you engagement, leads, and ultimately, sales.

Here’s how to know your audience better:

  • Use polls on Instagram Stories
  • Look at which posts get the most saves/comments
  • Read your DMs and note common questions
  • Dive into Google Analytics or social insights

Quick Fix:
Use your content to
listen as much as you post. Every comment, question, and scroll is a clue.

3. Selling All. The. Time. 💸

I get it. You’re running a business. You want to sell.

But when every post feels like a sales pitch, people start tuning out.

People don’t log into Instagram to buy; they come to connect, be entertained, and learn something new.

The fix? Serve before you sell.

Think about the last time you bought from a brand online. You probably followed them for a while, learned from them, and trusted them, and then you bought.

Quick Fix:
Use the 80/20 rule: 80% value-driven, educational, or relatable content. 20% promotional. Show them you’re the expert first.

4. Posting Once in a Blue Moon 🌚

You post once… then disappear for 3 weeks.

Then you come back with “Sorry I haven’t been posting…” (👀 we’ve all been there.)

The algorithm doesn’t like it. Your audience forgets you. And momentum? Gone.

Quick Fix:
Set a
realistic posting schedule. Start with 2–3 times a week. Use scheduling tools like Later, Metricool, or Creator Studio. Batch your content in advance so you’re not scrambling.

Even one solid post a week is better than disappearing for a month.

5. Ignoring SEO 🧠

If you’re blogging, updating your website, or even posting on Pinterest or YouTube, SEO matters.

Search Engine Optimization helps your content be seen by the right people at the right time.

Too many small businesses skip this step and wonder why no one is clicking.

Quick Fix:

  • Use keywords your audience searches for
  • Add alt-text to Instagram images
  • Make sure your website is mobile-friendly
  • Link internally between blog posts and service pages

SEO isn’t a one-time thing—it’s a habit. But once you build it, it becomes a growth engine that works while you sleep.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Just Create—Connect 💬

Content marketing doesn’t have to feel like a guessing game. When done right, it becomes your most powerful growth tool.

✅ Know your audience
✅ Build trust with value
✅ Show up consistently
✅ Optimize for visibility
✅ Keep selling
as a conversation, not the conversation

Still stuck on what to post or how to build a real content strategy?

Let’s fix that together.
