What NOT to Say in Your Instagram Captions (And What to Say Instead)
You know what’s worse than not posting at all?
Posting something that makes people scroll right past. 😬
Captions matter more than you think. They’re your chance to stop the scroll, spark emotion, and drive action.
But too many small business owners are making the same mistakes, and it’s costing them engagement, reach, and even sales.
Let’s break down the most common “caption killers” I see every day, and what to say instead.

❌ “New post!”
Why doesn’t it work?
It’s obvious. If someone sees it on their feed, they already know it’s a new post. It adds zero value and zero hook.
Try this instead:
“Here’s what no one tells you about [insert topic].”
“Struggling with [pain point]? Let’s talk.”
❌ “Check this out!”
Why doesn’t it work?
It’s vague. What am I checking out? Why should I care?
Try this instead:
“Inside this post: the 3 biggest mistakes [your audience] make with [topic], and how to fix them.”
❌ “We’re excited to announce…”
Why doesn’t it work?
It’s all about you. But the audience only cares about
what's in it for them.
Try this instead:
“Here’s how this launch helps you finally [insert benefit].”
❌ “Link in bio.”
Why doesn’t it work?
Okay... but
why should I click it? What's waiting on the other side?
Try this instead:
“Want the full guide? I broke it down step-by-step in today’s blog (link in bio 👆).”
✅ Final Thoughts:
Captions don’t have to be hard, but they do need to be
intentional.
Your next post could be the one that builds a connection or books a client if you speak to your audience like a real human.
